Beginnings


Chief Bryfonski began his career in law enforcement in 1975 as an intern with the Hartford, Connecticut Police Department and was subsequently appointed as a police officer in East Hartford, Connecticut where he rose to the rank of detective before leaving in 1984 to begin his career with the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
After graduating first in his class from basic training, Chief Bryfonski served in the Hartford, Connecticut and Portland, Maine Resident Offices.

Tuscson Arizona District Office


Chief Bryfonski was promoted to Group Supervisor and was transferred to the DEA Tucson Arizona District Office where he supervised the investigation of international drug trafficking organizations responsible for the importation of multi-ton quantities of cocaine and marijuana into the United States from Mexico.

Internal Affairs


Chief Bryfonski was then reassigned to DEA Headquarters in Arlington, Virginia where he served in DEA’s internal affairs branch, investigating allegations of criminal and administrative misconduct by DEA employees throughout the world.

New York Division


After serving his first tour of duty at DEA Headquarters, Chief Bryfonski returned to the field and was assigned to the New York Division where was responsible for the supervision and management of all DEA operations throughout upstate New York at offices in Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Albany and Plattsburgh.

Senior Executive Service


In September 2005, the DEA Administrator appointed Chief Bryfonski to DEA’s prestigious Senior Executive Service and brought him back to DEA Headquarters in charge of DEA internal affairs with offices in:
  • Dallas, Texas
  • Los Angeles, California
  • Newark, New Jersey
  • Plantation, Florida
  • Washington, DC

Special Agent in Charge


In 2009, Chief Bryfonski was promoted by DEA’s Administrator to Special Agent in Charge in command all DEA operations in Pennsylvania and Delaware where he led more than 300 DEA, state, county and municipal officers as well as analytical and other support staff assigned to DEA Delaware offices in:
  • Allentown
  • Delaware
  • Dover
  • Harrisburg
  • Philadelphia
  • Pittsburgh
  • Scranton
  • Wilmington

Current Appointment


Chief Bryfonski retired from DEA on September 16, 2011 and was appointed Chief of Police in Bedford, New Hampshire on September 19, 2011. Since his appointment, Chief Bryfonski embarked on an ambitious program that resulted in significant improvements to the department’s internal management information systems as well as the department’s training and community policing programs.

Accomplishments


Since becoming Chief, Chief Bryfonski instituted an internal performance measurement system and he improved the department’s social media program to connect residents with its Police Department through Twitter, Facebook and Nixle. In addition, Chief Bryfonski also developed and implemented the department’s first intranet information and intelligence sharing platform.

Home & Education


Chief Bryfonski is a native of Stuyvesant Falls, New York, and attended the University of Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut where he received both Bachelors as well as Masters degrees in Public Administration. Chief Bryfonski is certified as a Commercial Pilot and a Flight Instructor by the FAA and a graduate of the Senior Management Institute for Police in Boston.
